I was born in Haarlem, the beautiful old capital town of the province Noord-Holland in the Netherlands. My paternal grandmother was a 'Van Amstel', a well known Dutch name, which triggered my interest. After some research it became clear she was a descendant of the famous noble medieval family, the Lords of Amstel, best known for abducting and the (unintentional) subsequent killing of Floris the 5th, count of Holland, in 1296. That crime soon led too their downfall from wealth & power, expulsion from Holland and their settlement elsewhere. Allegedly Gijsbrecht IV van Amstel went to Prusian Holland (nowadays Poland), property of the Teutonic Order, and founded the city of Holland, today called Paslek.
